Lucky Strikes--used to give 5 new pennies in a pack of cigarettes--- Dad gave the pennies to my brother and I to save in our piggy banks.
I was in cub scouts--in Arlington--dad was a scout and thought it was a fine organization for a boy to be associated with.
I had a very good friend in those days, his name was John S.--he was my age--and he learned to tie a windsor knot before I did--We played all kinds of games mostly ones that didn't cost much at all--hide and seek--china berry fights, sliding down hills on pieces of cardboard, flying balsa model planes that were a nickle--kites and yo yo's weren't much---baseball,catchin lightening bugs, dodgeball,Red Rover, tree climbing. There were more games--but none were expensive---getting a bike was about the best for apt kids--and you could get streamers for the handle bars--often they were red white and blue--we put baseball cards on the spokes with cloths pens--to make racket--which is what happened to many a future valuable Micky Mantle and others. I can't speak for other kids but--when we played we had a wide area we hung out in-I guess little kids weren't snatched off the street as often--or it wasn't publicized---the thing I do remember is that on Halloween--the nut cases were doing things to kids candy--and it was on the T.V a lot--so that problem has been around during my lifetime and included the 40's and 50's as well. I mentioned in my profile--that I don't like ice roads---oh yes I have had plenty of near misses at all ages in my life--but the one that got the fear started was a trip our family made to Niagara Falls-- along for the trip was our family and my dads mother. Near the Falls was a road--with a shear drop off of several hundred feet---well we hit a patch of road with ice and our car went out of control-and we spun in the road--and nearly went over the side--it was as close a call as there could be--it was the screaming from my mother and Grandmother that I still remember---. Well that's all for now--I wanted to contribute something---have a wonderful day yall-------Bicycle------The Codger
